Points of Pride

Since being elected in 2023, the District has made important gains. 

Student Success

  • The percentage of students that met or exceeded their targeted reading growth from Fall 2024 to Spring 2025 was the highest in three years, as measured by STAR.

  • 48 of our students scored 30+ on their ACT.

  • 78% of students passed an AP exam with a 3 or better in spring 2025, the highest pass rate in the last six years.

  • Our Class of 2025 earned more than $5 million in scholarships.

  • Our district was recognized as one of the “Best Communities for Music Education” for the seventh consecutive year.

  • Both Tosa West and Tosa East qualified for the national APPSE championship.

  • The Tosa West Boys and Tosa East Girls Basketball teams were state champions.

  • 62 student artists won Scholastic Art Awards

  • More historically marginalized student groups are meeting or exceeding their growth benchmarks as measured by STAR. a. Female (64.6% in ’24 to 67.8% in ‘25); b. Hispanic (58.2% in ’24 to 68.7% to ‘25); and c. English Language Learners (47.6% in ’24 to 57.1% in ‘25).

  • Students with disabilities saw an increase in proficiency in reading from 2024 to 2025 as measured by the Forward exam. (2024 - 33.2% proficient; 2025 - 38.6% proficient)

  • Students that receive English language support saw an increase in proficiency in reading from 2024 to 2025 as measured by the Forward exam. (2024 - 24.6%; 2025 - 35.4%)

  • Number of students taking dual enrollment courses increased from 34 in 2023-2024 to 191 in 2024-2025, with 99% of them earning college credit.

  • Tosa East and West theater programs earned Jerry awards and local and national recognition. 

Safer Schools with Stronger Cultures

  • Total major office referrals are down more than 30% from 2,652 in 2022-23 to just 1,791 in 2024-25.

  • Administrative (pre-expulsion process) hearings are down 45% from 74 in 2022-23 to in 2024-25.

  • Expulsions decreased from 7 in 2022-23 to 0 in 2024-25.

  • Nearly 85% of students reported feeling safe at school in Spring 2025.

  • Student attendance is soaring. Students meeting ≥90% attendance is 10 percentage points higher in Nov. 2025 vs. Nov. 2024.

Attracting and Keeping Great Teachers

  • Almost 95% of our effective educators stayed in kids’ Tosa Schools in Fall 2025.

  • Our School Board increased teacher salaries by 31% since 2022 – making their compensation much more competitive with the region.

  • Our teacher to student ratio is 12.8 to 1, one of the lowest in our region, enabling our kids to have more 1x1 time with our exceptional educators.

Ensuring Sound Board Governance

  • Passed new cell phone policy prohibiting cell phones bell to bell.

  • Held increased number of Board/Community Engagement Sessions

  • Passed an updated, student-focused School Resource Officer (SRO) Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), keeping students safe.

  • Passed referendum to ensure competitive compensation for educators and staff.

  • Approved updated, evidence-based, staff supported curriculum for ELA, Math, Science and STEM.

  • Increased transparency for finances, referendum updates, student and school outcomes.

  • Participated in reviewing and updating Board policies; many of which hadn’t been updated in over a decade.

  • Advocated for and led an updated evaluation practice for the Superintendent and School Board’s annual reviews.
